Steel bar has been the backbone of reinforced concrete for over a century. It is strong, widely available, and well-understood by every structural engineer. However, in environments where moisture, salt, chemicals, or electromagnetic interference are present, steel corrosion becomes a costly and sometimes dangerous problem.
FRP rebar, also known as GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) rebar, offers a modern alternative. Made from high-strength glass fibers embedded in a polymer resin, FRP rebar does not rust, weighs approximately one-quarter as much as steel, and delivers roughly double the tensile strength. This article provides a data-driven comparison based on real product specifications, intended to help you make an informed material choice for your next project.
The table below presents the specifications for our FRP rebar products, manufactured to GB/T 26743-2011, the Chinese national standard for fiber-reinforced composite reinforcement.

1. Corrosion Resistance
In coastal, marine, or chemically corrosive environments, steel reinforcement inevitably corrodes. Corrosion causes the rebar to expand, leading to cracking in the surrounding concrete and a decline in structural performance. In contrast, FRP rebar possesses inherent corrosion resistance, withstanding attack from water, salts, acids, alkalis, and most industrial chemicals.
2. High Load-Bearing Capacity
FRP rebar offers a tensile strength of 600–650 MPa or higher, while weighing only about 25% of steel bar of the same diameter. For example, a 25 mm diameter (ϕ25) FRP bar weighs 0.95 kg/m, whereas HRB335 steel bar weighs 3.85 kg/m.
3. Electromagnetic Neutrality
Steel bar generates electromagnetic interference, which is unacceptable in settings such as MRI rooms, scientific research laboratories, substations, railway signaling systems, and maglev tracks. FRP rebar does not interact with electromagnetic fields, making it suitable for use in any electromagnetically sensitive environment.
4. Thermal and Electrical Insulation
The coefficient of thermal expansion for FRP rebar is closer to that of concrete than steel is. Under prolonged temperature fluctuations, this minimizes micro-stresses at the bond interface, reduces the risk of thermal cracking, and enhances long-term structural integrity.
5. Ease of Construction
FRP rebar can be cut using standard abrasive saws without special tools, and the cutting process produces no sparks. Its light weight allows a single worker to handle materials that would otherwise require two people. Furthermore, FRP rebar lacks sharp edges or splinters, making handling safer and reducing the need for extensive protective gear.
